Understanding Cancer: Education & Awareness

Knowledge empowers patients and families to make informed decisions about their care

Understanding Lung Cancer

Lung cancer affects approximately 238,000 people annually in the United States and is categorized into two main types:

  • Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC): 85% of cases
  • Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC): 15% of cases

Encouraging Progress: The 5-year survival rate has improved to 23% overall, with early-stage detection showing much higher survival rates. Nearly 20% of patients are non-smokers.

Key Symptoms: Persistent cough, chest pain, shortness of breath, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue.

Understanding Glioblastoma

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most aggressive form of primary brain cancer, affecting approximately 12,000-15,000 people annually in the United States.

  • Grade IV astrocytoma: Most malignant brain tumor type
  • Median survival: 12-18 months with current treatments
  • Age range: Most commonly affects adults 45-70 years old

Treatment Advances: New approaches including immunotherapy, tumor treating fields (TTFields), and targeted treatments are showing promise in clinical trials.

Key Symptoms: Headaches (especially morning), seizures, cognitive changes, personality changes, and neurological deficits.
